The Sorcerer's Drum is a thrilling coming-of-age novel set in North and West Africa at the turn of the nineteenth century. The hero is born into a feuding royal family exiled because of threatening ambitions. An uncle, who is a sorcerer, chooses the infant boy to be an instrument of revenge against the powerful Guild of Sorcerers and Poisoners that banished him. To achieve this aim he teaches the young prince the guild's magical and psychological crafts. Because of this vengeful destiny the growing prince must manage difficult trials, marvelous adventures, and exciting escapades before he is captured and abused by arab slavers. He escapes their clutches through mysterious manipulation of a sandstorm, but this leaves him close to death. Rescued by Tuareg salt traders and left in a desert cave, the skills of an ancient iron-master and his female slave heal him before he has to run away from sorcerer guild assassins. By favor of his orishas, M'nalo again survives and has more adventures before being forced to trust his future to the travails of a Caribbean bound slave-laden ship. The story makes insightful use of the mythologies of North and West african peoples, their cultural storytelling traditions and exotic practices. This layered, wise novel is a pleasure to read.

The Sorcerer's Drum is rich in culture and history. There is a magical quality to the story Kelvin James weaves and the incredible journey we travel with the main character, M'nalo.I enjoyed reading this gripping novel, particularly the second half. M'nalo and Bisui's liaison was seductive and alluring, and M'nalo's eventual escape from slavery made for some compelling reading.
I highly recommend the Sorcerer's Drum and am expectantly awaiting the publication of the forthcoming Web of Freedom!

If Scheherezade had shape shifted into the form a Trinidadian man, this is the kind of story she would have told. Kelvin weaves hundreds of beautiful tales together into a rich epic of Africa and the slave trade. In a story that is at once magically realist and hard-edged, we meet a host of vivid characters--wise men and fools, mothers and sons, princes turned poisoners--all wrestling their destinies from the force of history. And as usual, Kelvin's uncanny lyricism and his special gift for the transcending image only add to the many pleasures of reading his new book. Thank you, Kelvin!
Kelvin Christopher James brilliantly imagines the lives of others, and draws the reader closely into the passionate feelings (and foibles) of his characters. Whether he's writing of M'Nalo, a young African prince who is captured into slavery; the King's scheming first-wife Tabika who enlists the help of a mysterious sorcerer to gain ascendancy; or even the vicious Arab slavers, who drive their captured prisoners across the desert--all of them come alive on the page, so much so that you can imagine the colors, smells, and sounds all around them. James has a visceral literary style, and is unafraid to address the worst (and best) in human nature, which he accomplishes with great empathy and flair. This is story telling at its best. Highly recommended.
